Feeding Tube Awareness
Hi, my name is Miya I love helping out my community in many ways. Throughout my life so far, I have raised money in a number of different ways for charity. For example, I sold homemade cards, bracelets, and dog snacks for the Children’s Hospital. I have also donated my hair three times for making wigs for children with cancer and more.
Now I am fundraising for Feeding Tube Awareness Week which starts February 7th. As we get closer to that date, I will be doing different activities involving tube feeding awareness. This will include talking to some people who feed by tube, interviewing some tube feeding medical experts, and finding answers to your questions about tube feeding. I am even planning to really personally understand what it means to tube feed by experiencing it myself for 24 hours.
Now that you know a little about me and some of the things I will be exploring as we head into tube feeding awareness week, I would like to share with you where my interest in supporting tube feeding awareness came from. One of my closest friends, Sophie, whom I met in Grade 1, feeds by a gastric tube. She has a medical condition called Cerebral palsy and one of the challenges she has faced was feeding by mouth, so she now takes all her nutrition through a tube feed. We enjoy doing many things together such as walks, baking, biking, swimming, music, and more. Therefore it felt important to help raise awareness about tube feeding and how children, like my friend, can live active lives despite the challenges they face.
If you are interested in my journey to raise awareness, please follow my (social media tube_awareness_) and share my stories with others. You can also donate on my fundraising page (web page) and all the proceeds will go to the Help Me Thrive initiative at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre.
